The Marian Church provides a unique venue in which to examine the process of religious change during the English Reformation. Yet despite increasing scholarly interest in the ways in which religious change took place during that era, the Restoration Church has not received the detailed attention accorded to other aspects of the Reformation. One of the difficulties in studying the English Church during Mary I's reign is that modern scholars have been unable to agree on any substantive interpretation of the Restoration Church. This work will attempt to show that modern historiographical confusion is the result of profound disagreement among Marian Church leaders; that the sources of this disagreement lay largely in the English experience of Henrician and Edwardian religious change; and that the areas of consensus within the Marian Church were strong enough to create a cohesive institution, to legitimize popular practice, and to secure the willing conformity of some Protestants so long as England had a Catholic monarch, but these areas of consensus were not powerful enough to permit an effective resistance to the overthrow of Mary's settlement by Elizabeth or to create a unified Catholic community under Elizabeth's Protestant settlement.
