Thesis (Ed.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2005.
There is growing global need for quality online education with increased classroom engagement and student focused teaching approaches with the incorporation of multimedia and interactivity. This research study asked the following questions: Why is it that online courses do not contain enough interactive elements? What are the difficulties in creating online coursework with animation, video, effective use of graphic images/illustrations, sound and interactivity? How do community college faculty who work in the many areas of multimedia, such as graphic design, Web design, film/video work, digital sound, animation etc. view the present state of online course development? What are the variables that can make a difference in order to effectively transfer multimedia techniques online? This study used a sample of 200 faculty members of the California Multimedia Initiative who are specializing in the many subject areas of multimedia. The participants from 80 colleges statewide were surveyed electronically and 20% of the respondents were also interviewed. This dissertation also examined how community college faculty specializing in multimedia studies incorporate it into online course development. This paper defines and discusses elements of multimedia technology, such as typography, image use and compression, forms of animation, video/film, interface design and interactivity. The existing state of industry and future trends, as well as an overview of how we learn and how those learning techniques transfer online is included. This is followed by an examination of Faculty attitudes regarding online course development with a special emphasis on their willingness to incorporate multimedia techniques into online courses. The paper focuses on both the barriers and reward systems as perceived by the above defined community college faculty. The results of the study add to a growing knowledge base of a relatively new field: the use of multimedia techniques in online learning.
