Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2003.
This study examines the storytelling theory and practice of master storyteller Ruth Sawyer Durand. Experiences in young adulthood led her to choose a career in storytelling performance. Based on her professional experiences, Sawyer identified the requirements and qualities for master storytelling in her handbook, The Way of the Storyteller. Two stories, The Voyage of the Wee Red Cap and The Flea, collected and often told by Sawyer, are coded, using two different schema, one from the work of E. Fine, the other developed by Labov and Waletsky. Coding is followed by analysis of the stories for both their performance and narrative elements. Sawyer's story performances are then compared and contrasted with her stated principles of what makes a good storytelling performance. The study concludes that Ruth Sawyer was indeed a master storyteller and practiced her own stated principles for storytelling. Audience response, critical reviews and analysis of her performances are evidence of her mastery of the art and craft of storytelling. Implications for teaching are discussed and areas for future research are identified.
