Thesis (M.A.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2005.
As an important indicator of labour market condition, unemployment duration reflects the aggregate labour supply and demand. As a national welfare program, UI/EI has been playing an important role in providing temporary financial supports for unemployed individuals and assisting them to obtain a new job. Characteristics of unemployed workers also greatly influence the job search activity. In this thesis, with micro-data of Canadian unemployed workers from 1996 to 2000, the accelerated failure-time parametric duration models are employed to analyze the impact of EI parameters and characteristics of unemployed workers on the unemployment duration of Canadian workers. The econometric result implies that the existence of EI does extend the unemployment duration. Some characteristics such as gender, age, household size, union status and province of residence more or less affect unemployment duration.
