Specialty hospitals versus general hospitals: Which presents the standard of care for the future?
- 63 p.
Co-Readers: David Andersen; Jeffrey Weiss.
Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2005.
Health care has seen an influx of specialty hospitals in answer to the proliferation of managed care. The limitation to the mode of care and reimbursement for those services is tacit. Physicians have sought to regain control over their patients and income by entering into business arrangements with other practitioners in their specialty. Cost containment is possible by concentrating on a small set of diagnoses, improved outcomes are achieved when the same procedures are repeatedly performed, and it is felt that patients and physicians would experience a higher degree of satisfaction. General hospitals feel threatened by focused factories as they cater to higher priced procedures and those revenues and financially able patients may be spirited away from them. This paper will look at statistics and studies that have investigated which type of facility is better equipped to deliver cost containment, better outcomes and patient satisfaction.
