The results showed that participants viewed the mentally ill as being more violent than the average person across the three types of violence examined (sexual assault, physical assault, and murder). This finding is congruent with previous research. The results also indicated that source of knowledge was not related to authoritarianism or social restrictiveness. On the other hand, authoritarianism and social restrictiveness were significant predictors of perceived violence by the mentally ill.
