This descriptive correlation study investigated the relationship between body image, self-esteem, level of depression, life satisfaction, and quality of life in older adults following lower limb amputation. A series of questionnaires including the Amputee Image Body Scale, Rosenberg's Self Esteem Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Medical Outcomes Survey - Short Form 36 (SF-36) was distributed to an accessible population from two distinct regions.

A survey return rate of 51% (N = 66) yielded a total sample of 51 participants for the statistical analyses. Multiple analysis of variance and correlation analyses revealed that individuals with greater concern with body image had significantly lower self-esteem, higher levels of depression, and diminished perceptions regarding quality of life. In addition, multiple regression yielded an R2 = .628, suggesting that 63% of quality of life as measured by the SF-36 was accounted for by predictor variables of body image, self-esteem, level of depression, and life satisfaction. Demographic factors, such as age, gender, level of amputation, number of years since amputation, and number of comorbid medical conditions, did not significantly contribute to the regression findings.

Constructs of self-concept, particularly body image and self-esteem, are related to level of depression, life satisfaction, and quality of life in older adults following lower limb amputation. Rehabilitation efforts must continually strive to optimize the physical, psychological, and social potential if successful functional outcomes for older adults with amputation are to be achieved.
