"Etruscan Women's Lives: Re-Envisioning the Role of Women in Myths, Mirrors, and other Funerary Artifacts" is a re-examination of the origin stories of the Etruscan civilization, a look at the common threads that existed between the ancient Phoenicians and Etruscans, their divinations practices, social customs, and the impact of the goddess Turan on the Etruscan social system. Because of the lack of direct Etruscan material I use myths, mirrors, and other funerary objects to serve as the catalyst for viewing the ancient Etruscans.

The similarities between the customs and manners of the Phoenicians and the Etruscans shed light on Phoenician influences on the Etruscans and most specifically on the unique roles held by upper class Etruscan women in the western classical world. This influence helped to set the Etruscans apart from the rest of the Classical world, most specifically Greek and Romans.

The manufacture of mirrors and other funerary objects are physical examples of the variety of roles and freedoms of women in society, such as priestess, mother, and partner. I believe that the presence of Turan, the Etruscan goddess of love and sexuality, within the Etruscan pantheon was key to the formation of the Etruscan social structure with regard to the unique role that upper class women played and may hold the key to understanding the role of Etruscan women overall.
