Thesis (M.Phil.F.)--Institute for Christian Studies (Canada), 2005.
This thesis argues that to take into account only liberal interpretations of multicultural dilemmas would be insufficient and unrealistic in assessing the claims for justice of diverse ethnocultural communities. The paper explores the approach of Will Kymlicka, the leading democratic multiculturalist, by working through his major books and publications. It commands Kymlicka's on the one hand, but, on the other, also argues that his theory is marked by a number of limitations, because Kymlicka operates only with the norms and principles of liberal institutions. The author uses criticisms by some political theorists, Benhabib, Carens, Parekh, in order to develop his own position and to show that Kymlicka's theory of liberal multiculturalism assesses ethnocultural problems only through the prism of the liberal lenses, which is not enough to fully account for the recognition processes of multiple identities, particularly if the latter do not fall under the liberal umbrella.
