Thesis (M.A.)--Loyola University Chicago, 2005.
There are three apparent problems with the idea of holiness in Kant's ethics: sometimes it refers only to purely rational beings' wills, other times he says humans are commanded to be holy; this command must be reconciled with the sufficiency of progress toward holiness; this command must he reconciled with the radical evil innate in human nature that I argue Kant's theory of grace does not adequately resolve. I argue that: holiness should be understood as autonomy; holiness can be achieved but we cannot confirm such achievement, and infinite progress is sufficient only for God whose intuits it at once; Kant is wrong in holding radical evil to be actual rather than merely possible insofar as our dispositions are inscrutable to us (thus---again---we can be holy though we cannot know its actuality or absence, and need not posit grace or God for the supreme good's achievement).
