Thesis (M.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2005.
This thesis is an investigation of Leo Strauss's claim in Natural Right and History that members of a civil society have a natural right to private property. I take issue with Strauss's reading of Hobbes and Locke which is central to his conclusion that a natural right to private property is a consequence of an individual's right to self preservation.

The thesis argues that Strauss fails to establish that the right to self preservation and private property enjoyed by individuals prior to commonwealth formation does not transform, as Strauss suggests, into a moral duty to constantly acquire material wealth.

I also challenge Strauss's conclusion that the exclusive purpose of sovereignty agreements is to ensure the collective security of a society. I argue that such an understanding of social contract limits individual liberty which must be sacrificed in order to ensure the power of the sovereign.
