520 $a This research investigated phylogenetic and systematic relationships of Leptochloa, a grass genus of 32 species and 10 subspecies. Two newly described species, Leptochloa srilankensis and Leptochloa southwoodii, are recognized.
520 $a The phylogenetic relationships of species in Leptochloa were investigated using data from morphology, micromorphology, and leaf and stem anatomy. Three outgroups were used alone and together. Since the results consistently reject the null hypothesis that Diplachne represents a clade distinct from Leptochloa, Diplachne is no longer taxonomically recognized. However, under the highest level of cladistic stringency, the monophyly of Leptochloa is not always supported. Considerable evidence supports the removal of Leptochloa monticola from Leptochloa, and suggests it may belong in either Gouinia or Enteropogon. It is argued that autapomorphies should be included in cladistic analyses, since their absence may bias the results against a highly autapomorphic taxon from appearing at or near the base of the tree.
