The goal of this investigation was to test several predictions regarding similarities between speech development and the general development of coordinated action. This was accomplished by comparing perceptual and acoustic measures of speech signals that were produced by 115 speakers whose ages ranged from infancy to adulthood. The measures compared were assumed to be correlates of the accuracy, speed, economy, consistency and regularity of speech movements as these phenomena have been used to characterize the development of spatial-temporal control. A prerequisite to testing predictions about the relationship between acoustic measures and increasing age of speaker was to identify satisfactory spectral normalization procedures to eliminate the absolute resonant frequency differences that result from vocal tract size differences. The bark difference transformation (Syrdal, 1985) was used to normalize vocalic speech segments and the spectral moments analysis (Forrest et al., 1988) was used to normalize obstruent segments.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Both of the normalization procedures were successful in eliminating absolute spectral differences across speakers for the speech segments analyzed, with some limitations. In addition, the inter-age comparisons of perceptual and normalized spectral and temporal measures revealed aspects of the speech signal that were sensitive to age (accuracy and consistency) and aspects that appeared relatively stable across a wide age range of speakers (relative timing). The acoustic measures used to quantify speed (rate of spectral change) varied with vowel formant. Age related differences in the CV transition extents for the first formant were apparent. Rates of spectral change in the second formant appeared relatively stable across age. The measures used to quantify economy suggested that CV coarticulation is greater in younger speakers while temporal reduction of vowels and spectral reduction of the first formant in low vowels are greater in older speakers.

This preliminary attempt at applying spectral normalization procedures to compare speech produced by children and adults suggests that acoustic correlates of phenomena that characterize the development of coordinated action have the potential to refine our understanding of speech maturation and to generate hypotheses for kinematic investigations of speech development.
