Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2006.
College-qualified Hispanic students are significantly over-represented in community colleges compared to White and Black students. Since attending a community college results in a significant labor market disadvantage due to a lower likelihood of completing a Bachelor's degree, this pattern of over-representation in community colleges positions Hispanic students at an unparalleled disadvantageous starting point as they enter the labor market. This study was designed to create a better understanding of the cultural dynamics that are at play in affecting the educational choices of college-qualified Hispanic students.

The literature documents a lack of adequate information about higher education and lack of adequate financial aid information among Hispanic students and parents. This study tests the effect of this lack of information on college choice among different populations, and uses this lack of information to explain the statistical interaction of Hispanic students with residential patterns and socio-economic status.

Through, four separate analyses I point at the significant effects of the Hispanic preference for staying at home while attending college and of incomplete information about higher education and college finances. These patterns are embedded in the nature of the social capital of the Hispanic community, as it directly affects the exposure of community members to information. Less access to social capital results in lack of adequate information about higher education and its costs and about financial aid, and these, in turn, result in college-qualified Hispanic high school graduates applying to community colleges instead of 4-year schools at higher rates than Whites or Blacks do.
