Since Alfred Butler wrote his history of the Islamic conquest of Egypt in 1902 there has been little work on the subject. The Futuh Misr is the oldest available Arab chronicle on the conquest of Egypt, yet Butler never utilized this text directly in his study. Because there is a great deal of confusion among the sources concerning this period, it would be useful to re-examine the history of the Islamic conquest of Egypt using Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam as our guide. The goal is to determine the value of this text to the historian, and to find out if it can offer anything new to our understanding of the events.

This work begins with an introduction of the Istanbul Manuscript of the Futuh Misr, along with an analysis of how it compares to the other four manuscripts known to exist today. It is almost a word for word equal to the better-known London manuscript, but in presentation quality.

The four historical problems examined in relation to the Futuh Misr are: (1) The idea that there was a pre-invasion treaty between Egypt and the Arabs, (2) A critical review of the character al Mugawqis as he is represented in Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam, (3) A study of the conquest of Babylon and the issue of treaties related to it, (4) An examination of the both conquests of Alexandria, with a special emphasis on the question of whether Egypt was taken by force or by treaty.

The conclusions attained in this work support the idea that Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam offers new insight into our understandings of the Islamic conquest of Egypt. He relates information not found in other Arab chronicles, and the vast quantity of traditions he records helps link together the Muslim accounts with those of the Christian world in a way far superior to his counterparts.
