The conservative religious organizations known collectively as the Religious Right have dominated the world where faith and politics meet in America since the 1980s. There is, however, a diverse constellation of faith-based groups on the political left who are seeking to influence public policy. The Network of Spiritual Progressives is one of the newest groups to join the Religious Left.

These two religious movements, the Religious Left and Right, are not simply mirrors of one another. In fact, they are quite different, most prominently in their demographic make-up, their issues of focus, their political operations and their media coverage. These differences have added up to one movement being feared and the other ignored. However, the dissimilarities are so marked that the accomplishments of the Religious Right should not be used as a measuring stick for those of the Religious Left.
