This reflective paper presents the results and analysis of the implementation of a creative mask-making project associated with a new curriculum unit developed by the author for an elementary level art project. The goal of the art unit was to foster a knowledge and awareness of global cultural diversity through the study of masks and folktales of various traditional cultures. This interdisciplinary project inspired the students in their creative design and construction of animal masks and culminated in a museum-like exhibit. The reflective paper includes a description of the creative elementary level art project itself, including the general response of students, teachers, parents, and community, a discussion of the influence and integration of the author's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree courses, evaluation of the response and impact of the unit project, evaluation of the incorporation of the New York State Standards in Art into the objectives of the unit, and proposed changes and improvements for future applications.Subjects--Topical Terms:
