Thesis (M.A.)--Michigan State University, 1998.
Focusing on Beuys' multiple productions and his identity, I examine how he created the important arenas of strategic intervention of his identity and persona, including his experience during World War II. Beuys' multiples function as a record and autobiographical voice of the artist's activities, and provide the paradigm for self-managed retrospectives by fusing life and art, and by making autobiography into art. The importance of Beuys' commitment to multiples is consistent with the identity he tried to create in his work and in his life. Through the study of multiples the important strands can reveal his myth-creating and his creation of his own identity.
