Through the analysis of special education records of family members, and narratives in written and oral forms, the author shows how the identity of an individual, family and a group of people can be constructed and maintained through the communal contextualization of a school and special education discourse at the site of a multidisciplinary conference (MDC).

The project is composed through what the author calls Mestizo Thought and Literacy, a composition theory grounded in the conquest of Mexico, the outgrowth of a new people and the space they found themselves as part of two worlds, two pasts, two collective memories, individual lived memory and defining themselves in that space. The outcome is stories lined together to form an ongoing narrative of a people no longer wanting to live in the hybrid world offered to them. The author is but one of these voices.
