Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2006.
This study examines the sources and consequences of the framing of CEO succession. Specifically, I test whether the power relations between the outgoing CEO (the individual that is CEO prior to the succession) and the board of directors impacts the manner in which the organization frames its succession. Next, I examine whether this framing represents a window into the going-in mandate for the incoming CEO. I test this idea by examining the amount of strategic change that incoming CEOs (the individual that is CEO after the succession) undertake. Lastly, I hypothesize that the degree to which the incoming CEO undertakes actions that are consistent with the going-in mandate will affect both changes in his or her compensation as well as the likelihood that this individual will be dismissed early in his or her tenure. To test these ideas I examine the content of the press release that company's prepare to announce the appointment of the incoming CEO.
