Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique which can produce images with excellent soft tissue contrast within the body. In the past twenty years, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has developed very rapidly and shown its tremendous clinical potential to evaluate the structure and the function of the heart. Recent studies have demonstrated that regional function measures are more specific and accurate in defining myocardial function abnormalities than global function measures. However, until recently, the assessment of regional function has been limited by long acquisition time and cumbersome post-processing procedures.

520 $a MR tagging was proposed as a technique which can provide spatially modulated tag pattern on otherwise featureless myocardium and quantitatively assess the regional function of the heart. However, conventional tag analysis involves a lot of human interventions and time-consuming post-processing. Harmonic Phase (HARP) was introduced as a technique that can perform fast and semiautomatic two-dimensional (2D) tag analysis. In this thesis, two studies based on HARP approach were performed. (1) A fast, semiautomatic method, called 3D-HARP, was developed to perform three-dimensional (3D) motion tracking from a temporal sequence of spatial modulation of magnetization (SPAMM) images; (2) A technique called 3D Slice-Following (SF)-HARP was developed which can track 3D true motion of material markers inside myocardium using SF complementary SPAMM (SF-CSPAMM) images.
520 $a Strain Encoded (SENC) imaging is an important addition to evaluate the regional function of the heart. SENC is based on MR tagging and can directly image the regional contractility of the heart without post-processing. In this thesis, two studies based on SENC imaging were performed. (1) A technique, termed fast-SENC, was developed for real-time imaging the regional function of the heart using a spiral acquisition in combination with SENC imaging. (2) The SENC and fast-SENC imaging sequences were implemented at 3 Tesla and the performance and feasibility of the two sequences were evaluated. An expected signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) increase at 3T creates even more potential for a reduction of total scan time.
