Thesis (D.Eng.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2001.
Poly(lactic acid) and PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer (Pluronics RTM) were solution blended using methylene chloride as the solvent in a ratio of 80% PLLA and 20% PluronicsRTM. All of the blends were compressed into films. The properties of the blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile testing. The physical aging was studied to determine the long term stability. Hydrolytic degradation in PBS buffer was performed to determine the degradation rate of the blends. A cell culture study was conducted using the blends.

The effects of PluronicsRTM on PLLA were studied in series by varying both the content of PEO/PPO and the MW of PEO/PPO. The solubility parameter of PEO and PLLA are similar while the solubility parameter of PPO and PLLA are different. As a result, PEO is miscible with PLLA and increases the molecular flexibility of PLLA. On the other hand, PPO can be partially miscible with PLLA and act as a plasticizer when the MW of PPO is less than 2000 and is immiscible when the MW of PPO is larger than 2000. Pluronics RTM with the MW of PPO less than 2000 were studied. The blends of PLLA and PluronicsRTM with high content of PEO to PPO showed higher miscibility and higher molecular flexibility and thus had the lower Tg and modulus values, and higher elongation at break. On the contrary, the blends of PluronicsRTM with lower contents of PEO to PPO showed lower miscibility and lower molecular flexibility and thus had higher Tg and modulus values, and lower elongation at break. Indeed, this low miscibility is more pronounced when the MW of PPO is increasing.
