Rats exhibit ultradian as well as circadian activity rhythms that may be feeding-related. The present studies examined the relationship of activity to feeding in male and female rats and the effects of ovariectomy and hormone replacement on activity and feeding rhythms in females. Feeding bouts were recorded with a photocell device. Activity was monitored with an ultrasonic activity recording device.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In experiment 1, the activity and feeding of 12 male Long-Evans derived rats were monitored for 40 days. The first ten days were an ad libitum feeding baseline period. A restricted feeding (RF) regimen (food available for two hours in the light period) was then implemented for 20 days. Finally, a ten day recovery ad libitum feeding period was instituted.

Spectral analysis of baseline feeding and activity data revealed a dominant 24 hour peak and ultradian peaks in the 4 to 6 hour range and at 8 hours. Spectrograms of RF showed a marked reduction in the 24 hour peak in both feeding and activity after ten days. By the end of RF all animals exhibited a reduction of 24 hour activity and feeding peaks and an increase in amplitude at approximately 12 hours. Recovery period spectrograms showed circadian and large ultradian components.

The subjects for Experiment 2 were 24 female Long-Evans derived rats. Procedures followed that for experiment 1 with the addition of a surgery recording period. Spectral analyses revealed a dominant 24 hour peak and minor 4 to 6 hour peaks in baseline. No change in spectra was noticed after ovariectomy. Estradiol appeared to reduce the amplitude of ultradian components. RF resulted in a 12 hour peak in four animals while circadian peaks were found in ten animals.

A general finding was that RF resulted in anticipatory activity prior to feeding. Short-term activity fluctuations and food bin investigations continued during RF. In general, RF decreased nocturnal activity. The results suggest that male and female Long-Evans rats exhibit ultradian activity rhythms and that there is a strong relationship between activity and feeding.
