Thesis (Ph.D.)--New School for Social Research, 1998.
The Great Exhibition of 1851, the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886, and the phenomenon of the colonial picture postcard at the end of the century all generated spectacular images of India for European consumption that, in turn, helped refashion metropolitan social space. This dissertation examines how these late nineteenth century spectacles created a powerful stock of public images of India that helped consolidate the processes of imperial rule. By examining several contexts for the popular representation of India in Victorian London (exhibitions, postcards, and living displays) the dissertation exposes the powerful visual frameworks through which Indian culture has been historically imagined.

The study thus situates a number of important themes: the status of visual knowledge in the project of empire, the relationship between culture and its material representations, and the impact of the developing science of anthropology on the popular culture of Victorian Britain. It also offers an extended case study of how a modern western self was consolidated in contrast to a traditional Indian other within the visual arenas of imperial culture. In another sense this dissertation is an attempt to confront the enduring legacy and the powerful visual basis of our modern paradigms for culture and difference.
