The traditional nominative-accusative analysis of Philippine language case-marking systems assumes actor focus clauses function as active voice and object focus clauses function as passive voice. In discourse, active voice clauses can be distinguished from passive voice clauses by three quantifiable functional criteria: (a) relative topicality of agents and patients; (b) frequency of use to express transitive propositions; and (c) degree of transitivity. Following Cooreman, Fox, and Givon (1984) and Hopper (1983), this study compares the discourse functions of actor focus and object focus clauses in five Cebuano narrative texts. Object focus clauses in punctual aspect are shown to function as active voice clauses rather than passive voice according to two of the three criteria, while actor focus clauses resemble antipassives. These results support the ergative-absolutive analysis of Cebuano case marking rather than the traditional nominative-accusative analysis.Subjects--Topical Terms:
