In this study, we explore the metaphor from a pragmatic point of view. From this point of view, a metaphor is regarded, as a type of utterance relating two cognitive or linguistic domains perceived as discrepant. The research has yielded results that conclude that a metaphor can also be considered a linguistic choice speakers use to fulfil certain communicative needs. The data come from a corpus of metaphors in texts in colloquial Spanish such as face-to-face interactions, radio, television programs, newspapers interviews and advertising.

Accordingly, we consider that the pragmatic perspective (Verschueren, 1999) allows for the description of how the utterance of conventional or original metaphor is adaptable to the context and can generate meaning by provoking metapragmatic awareness, i.e., some reflection about language and its use. Users can take advantage of the interplay between the implicit and the explicit since they can perceive in a metaphor the distance between what is said and what is meant. This distance makes a metaphor a dangerous utterance that must be signalled in order to limit or determine its interpretation. The "markers of metaphors" pre-empt possible interpretations of a metaphorical utterance, and can be indicators of metapragmatic awareness.

The linguistic choice of a metaphor or a simile is studied in connection with their differences in cognitive and discourse constraints. Consequently, we have also situated metaphor within the map of relationships with the simile, and also with the hyperbole and the act of insulting. In this sense, we have concluded that the participants can contextualize metaphorical utterances by inferring and evaluating the intention of the utterer. In exploring metaphor, we have shown how the creation of meaning occurs at the moment of uttering a metaphor. The study of the creativity in colloquial language is centred on the opacity of the sign that allows the utterer to use all the linguistic resources and inferential and cognitive processes in order to adapt and create meaning.
