Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 1999.
Most investigators interested in child language obtain linguistic samples from free play contexts only. However, research with clinical groups and typically-developing, middle SES controls suggests that context itself influences the level of language skill children display (Evans & Craig, 1992; Abbeduto, Benson, Short, & Dolish, 1995; MacLauchlan & Chapman, 1988). The aim of the present work was to explore how variations in context affect the expressive language skills of children from different socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds.

Language samples were collected from 18 lower SES and 18 middle SES 5-year-olds in four contexts, free play, narration, interview, and recounting events. The linguistic demands of these contexts vary in that narration, interview, and recounting events require extended talk outside of the here-and-now while free play requires only brief, back-and-forth exchanges about objects and events in the immediate present. Results indicated strong context effects for both lower and middle SES children. For the most part, lower SES children displayed a lower level of language skill than middle SES children in all contexts. However, SES differences were greater in the free play context than in the narration and interview contexts. Lower SES girls, but not boys, displayed a comparable level of syntactic skill as the middle SES group in the interview context. For middle SES children, language skill in free play was strongly associated with language skill in narration and interview whereas for the lower SES group, language skill in free play and the other contexts was unrelated. These results are discussed in terms of their importance for understanding the nature of SES differences in child language and their implications for assessment and educational issues.
