The objective of this dissertation is to produce a reconstruction of the segmental phonology of OJ on the basis of the ongana phonograrns (Chinese characters used for only their sound values) in the poetry of two eighth century texts, Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters; 712 CE) and Nihon shoki (Chronicles of Japan; 720 CE). This reconstruction will: (1) incorporate state of the art reconstructions of Old and Middle Chinese (as reflected through Sinoxenic and the Vietnamese nom writing system). (2) be compatible with internal and comparative reconstructions of pre-OJ. (3) be compatible with developments in post-eighth century Japanese. (4) be typologically plausible (i.e., be as unmarked as possible). (5) be statistically based.
