The received wisdom in SLA literature is that a second/foreign language learner needs to acquire "native-like competence" in the L2. Different from this view, researchers in bilingualism and multilingualism claim that a bilingual is not a combination of two monolinguals in one person, that is, a bilingual has a complex linguistic system which may be characterized as a code repertoire which draws upon two codes. There is some support for the latter view in the study being reported herein.

This study examines how native and non-native speakers of Portuguese judged appropriateness of specific speech acts in use. 207 participants subdivided into four groups (Americans and Brazilians living in Brazil and Americans and Brazilians living in the USA) completed open-ended questionnaires, metapragmatic assessment tasks, judgment tasks, and post-interviews. Similarities and differences among these groups were examined through statistical analyses and results showed how the bilingual groups accommodated their differences.

A speaker's linguistic and cultural identity as well as length of residence in a second language environment proved major factors contributing to her/his choices of discourse strategies in the L2. Data suggested that contact with a second language and community also influences the speaker's attitude and linguistic choices in interactions in his/her own L1. Findings from the present study question the current view of the relevance of "native speaker competence" in second language acquisition literature. The study points out the implications of the coexistence of two or more language systems in a speaker's mind and their influence on his/her sociocultural values and sociopragmatic decisions when speaking either of the two languages.
