- 219 p.
Co-Chairs: Adele Goldberg; David Swinney.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, San Diego, 1995.
This dissertation examines the mental representation and processing of verbs and presents empirical evidence for the processing reality of the notion of participant roles--thematic roles that are associated with the basic sense of a verb. The evidence for this comes from on-line sentence processing experiments that probe the nature of verb access as well as the nature of integration of the verb into the sentence.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The major points discussed are as follows: first, the controversial notion that the rate of access of a verb is a function of the number of argument structure configurations associated with that verb (Shapiro et al. 1987, 1991; Schmauder 1991, Schmauder et al. 1991) is critically reviewed on the basis of linguistic data and is rejected on the basis of empirical data. Second, the concept of participant roles, and the notion that meaning involves frame semantic information, which is given prominence in the linguistic theory of Construction Grammar, receives empirical support. Third, the time course of information processing, particularly what representations are accessed immediately at the verb and what constraints are involved in the integration of the verb into preceding context, is detailed. In particular, participant roles are shown to integrate with the structural information given by the sentence, indicating that both top-down and bottom-up information is used in comprehending language. Fourth, the implications of the above findings are spelled out for two current linguistic theories: a lexical account (Levin 1985; Rappaport and Levin 1988; Rappaport, Laughren and Levin 1987, 1993; Levin and Rappaport Hovav 1995) and a constructional account (Fillmore 1985, 1988; Goldberg 1992a, 1995; Fillmore, Kay, O'Connor 1988).
