The dissertation is organized thus: Chapter II surveys the relevant literature.

There have been no studies published which systematically analyze ontological metaphor in Spanish; nor has adequate attention been given to the semantic link between the basic domain and the extended metaphors.

According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980), metaphor results from extending the meaning of terms which refer to basic experiences to describe other areas of life. They discuss ontological metaphor as the extension of terms, which in the basic sense describe material substances, to describe areas of life which are not--strictly speaking--physical entities.

This dissertation's purpose is to: (a) provide a componential analysis of the semantic field which constitutes ontological metaphor: the three states of matter--solid, liquid, and gas; (b) show the semantic link between the basic and metaphorical domains; (c) give an extensive cataloging of matter metaphors across lexical domains in Spanish.

Chapter III presents the Framework of Analysis. First, a componential analysis of the meaning of the basic domain is conducted according to the classical theory of sets. The weaknesses with CT are discussed; and a solution to the problem of fuzziness is offered, integrating select theories of prototypes. Finally, three postulates are given which circumscribe the grounds for the creation of metaphor.

Chapter IV presents the methodology for establishing the lexical sets, giving a hierarchy of terms, related under the Spanish superordinates: solido, liquido and gas. It is noted that while componential analysis cannot generate lexical sets, it provides a standard for judging appropriateness of membership within a lexical set. The means of obtaining the lexical data is then given. Finally, the limitations of the study are discussed.

Chapter V analyzes Spanish matter metaphors extended to the domains, People, Thought, Emotions, Institutions, Money, Time and Technology. The 'qualifier' is introduced as the meaningful link between the basic and metaphorical domains. Lakoff-and-Johnson type metaphors are stated.

Chapter VI analyzes comprehensively the abstract domain of Money and Finance. The abstract nature of Money is discussed, although, interestingly, frequently represented by material terms. Abundant examples are supplied showing the distinct extension from each state.
