Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brandeis University, 1992.
This thesis is an exploration of talk at a Kpelle funeral in light of current theories of contextualization, the social processes through which interactants construct meanings in discourse. I have particularly emphasized the process of linking talk as it is produced in the present to talk from the past and to possible future talk.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This thesis is an exploration of talk at a Kpelle funeral in light of current theories of contextualization, the social processes through which interactants construct meanings in discourse. I have particularly emphasized the process of linking talk as it is produced in the present to talk from the past and to possible future talk.

In its uncontested form this linking includes not only connections to specific texts but also the development and application of patterns of past actions to talk in the present as interlocutors attempt to cooperatively construct a shared understanding of a text. In its contested form this process reveals the strategic element potential in all such linking. Interlocutors' agreement or disagreement over which past or future the present should be linked to can have significant political implications. By attending to the linking of texts we gain a close reading of a particular text as well as deeper insight into the social, political and historical processes in which the text is embedded.

I argue that this process of linking is made more comprehensible by the expansion of the fundamental roles in talk to include not only speakers and hearers but also witnesses--individuals who explicitly or implicitly re-present current talk in other, later or more distant talk. Such a model would advance the study human communication beyond the description of the psychological processes of speech production and uptake to an examination of the social processes for constructing understandings.
