The Parkway School District is located in suburban St. Louis County, Missouri. Less than four percent of all Parkway residential students are black. Six years ago, the Parkway School Board entered into a voluntary agreement with the U.S. District Court to permit black students who resided in St. Louis City to attend Parkway Schools. Concerns were voiced by the Parkway community which suggested that city students coming to Parkway would adversely impact the education process in Parkway. This study examines the grading patterns in the Parkway high schools during the initial period of the voluntary agreement.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The findings show that from 1984 through the 1988 school years, there was a gradual decline in the grade point averages of Parkway high school students. Statistically significant differences were found between the grade point averages of residential and transfer students. These differences occurred district wide and at each of the district high schools. While both residential and transfer student grade point averages increased during the period of the study, the decline in the district wide grade point averages was attributed to the increasing number of transfer students and their lower grades.
