Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2006.
This mixed-model study examined the relationship between personal barriers and life satisfaction for female welfare recipients transitioning to employment. Twenty-seven African-American women on temporary assistance for needy families (TANF) completed a Quality of Life Inventory (QOLI) as well as an additional survey requesting information on background information, self-reported barriers, and personal views on the welfare system and programs. Motivation theory provided the framework for examining the relationship between needs and barriers as well as the relationship between motivation and life satisfaction. Findings from this study indicated a similarity in the barriers reported by both employed and unemployed women, which is consistent with previous studies. Most common barriers reported included limited work experience, childcare needs, and limited education. Results from independent-samples t-tests showed no statistical significance between the rated importance of barriers and quality of life satisfaction scores of the two groups when using a series of t-scores. There was a correlation between quality of life and the self-rated importance of barriers; less importance of barriers was associated with higher quality of life. Women make up the majority of people living in poverty. Agencies working with women seeking employment should develop effective programs that address potential employment barriers and thereby increase the rate of job placement and retention.
