The Scale of Interpersonal Situations: A measure for the intra-interpersonal model of relationships.
- 90 p.
Adviser: Catherine E. Aponte.
Thesis (Psy.D.)--Spalding University, 2006.
This study describes the process of development of a measure, The Scale of Interpersonal Situations (SIS), based on the Intra-Inter Personal (IIP) Model of Relationships developed by Aponte (2002, 1995) in a sample of 37 first year undergraduates. The IIP Model (Aponte 2002. 1995) examines social interactions simultaneously from the perspective of intrapersonal contributions to interpersonal relational processes and understanding relational processes as matters of negotiation of the individual wants and desires of equally valued partners. Reliability and validity of the SIS was examined using a pool of 68 items to represent the different dimensions of the model. Internal consistency reliability of the measure using Cronbach's Alpha found that four subscales: Self-Awareness Management, Negative Emotionality, Negative Emotionality Mismanagement, and Emotional Awareness had excellent internal consistency. SIS scales were found to have good convergent validities with respect to measures of emotional intelligence, empathy, interpersonal problems, and self-esteem. Strategies for further validation of the SIS, especially in regard to discriminant validity, are recommended.
