This study was designed to further refine the theoretical underpinnings of the Autonomy and Agency dimensions of the Professional Role Orientation Inventory (PROI) and to test additional items with practicing professionals. The rationale for refinement was based on (a) previous PROI studies, suggesting that a five factor structure rather than the originally proposed four factor structure (Authority, Responsibility, Autonomy and Agency) represented a better fit to the data---especially for practicing professionals, and (b) recent studies in the psychological literature (e.g., Spittal et al., 2002) suggesting the Autonomy and Agency dimensions might be better represented by three factors (Personal Efficacy, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Sociopolitical Management). Consequently, new definitions and new items were proposed for testing. A 93-item PROI (R-PROI) was sent to 2002 active members of the American College of Dentists (ACD), selected randomly from the ACD database. Based on 1167 responses, the reliability and the factor structure of the R-PROI was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The R-PROI was moderately reliable ( a = .88), but the five factor structure of the R-PROI produced goodness-of-fit indexes indicating that the model leaves unexplained a substantial amount of the variability in the data. The next step is to test the R-PROI with a more diverse sample of professionals and students.
