Reliability generalization is a method used to depict mean measurement error variances and the causes of such score error variance across studies (Vacha-Haase, 1998). It is used to identify (a) the variability in reliability estimates for an instrument across studies, (b) the typical score reliability for an instrument, and (c) the salient features across studies that affect the variability in reliability estimate scores. A reliability generalization study is unique in that it identifies how and why score reliability varies for a particular instrument. The purpose of this correlational study was to identify variables that contribute to the reliability of scores on the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. Even though this measure has been criticized for not producing reliable scores, it continues to be used frequently in coping research. This study sought to rectify this problem by gathering all of the studies using the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WOCQ) and identifying variables that contribute to the variance in score reliability so that researchers can use the measure in a way that produces reliable scores. The results of this study found that the range of reliability coefficient alphas varied significantly among the WOCQ subscales. The Positive Reappraisal subscale had the least amount of variability while the Self-Controlling subscale had the largest amount of variability. Typical reliability scores for the subscales ranged from 0.60 (Confrontive Coping) to 0.75 (Positive Reappraisal). Three regression equations were significant for the Escape-Avoidance, the Positive Reappraisal, and the Self-Controlling subscales. Significant predictors varied across subscales. Source (adults versus other age groups) and format (self-report versus interview) were significant predictors for the Escape-Avoidance subscale. Source was a significant predictor for the Positive Reappraisal and Self-Controlling subscales. Format was a significant predictor for the Seeking Social Support subscale. The results of this study suggest that there are specific steps researchers can take to improve the reliability of scores they obtain when using the WOCQ.
