The intention of this study is to shed further light upon the language, history and culture of pre-Islamic North Arabia, in particular upon the people known as the Safaitic bedouin. These tribesmen, closely related to the later Arab bedouin, inhabited the north Arabian desert during the first few centuries of the christian era. Our knowledge of these people is still obscure, despite the publication of some 13 000 Safaitic inscriptions prior to this study. New information about these bedouin has here been provided in a more systematic manner than in the past and, although some questions have been answered, still more have been raised.

During the course of two visits to Jordan, in 1976 and 1977, a total of 1197 previously unrecorded inscriptions in the Safaitic script were systematically recorded. All of these were found in the eastern desert region known as Harrat ar-Rajil. They form the basis of the present study, which has been divided into two parts.

Part One contains a detailed discussion of various matters arising either directly or indirectly from the study of the new inscriptions. Matters discussed are: (1) Previous works in which Safaitic inscriptions have been published; (2) The sites at which the inscriptions of the present collection were found; (3) Rock art found with the inscriptions; (4) Details of the paleography of the inscriptions (this chapter serves as an introduction to the problems of Safaitic paleography); (5) Historical implications arising from previously published Safaitic inscriptions; (6) Points of orthography and grammar arising from the new texts; (7) Information from the new texts concerning the religious beliefs and the deities of the Safaites; (8) The personal and tribal names of the present collection.
