This study seeks to compare student attitudes and behaviors between fifth grade students in a school district that has implemented a character education program and fifth grade students in a school district that is using the Michigan Curriculum Framework. The sample involves a total of 174 fifth grade students in the two schools. Data were collected through the use of the Children's Perceived Self-Control (CPSC) Scale that measures self control using a cognitive behavior perspective; Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control (NSLC) Scale that measures whether children believe that reinforcement comes to them through external sources (chance/fate) or because of their own behavior (internal locus of control); along with a short demographic survey. These instruments were selected as they had been developed to measure psychosocial behaviors of children that reflect the presence or absence of character and values that are the focus of character education.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The findings indicated that students in the school that used the Michigan Curriculum Framework exercised a higher degree of interpersonal self-control. The students who attended the school that used the character education model had lower scores on the locus of control scale, indicating that they were more inclined to take responsibility for their actions.
