It is a long standing and well documented assumption that the elderly suffer generalized decline in both physiological and psychological characteristics. However, this judgment may, in part, be due to the prevalent mode of visual pre-screening of subjects prior to testing of cognitive abilities, which begins with a simple assessment of visual acuity.

520 $a Traditional visual screening methods have proven to be inconsistent and unreliable. The model most frequently used and its procedure are problematic. Cognitive researchers have assumed that a simple visual screening would provide reliable information on a subject's visual status without considering the consequences of visual performance due to aging. In addition, the testing methods involve a computer to provide ocular stimulation. This is a poor choice, due to its many flaws.
520 $a A change in the testing model could minimize the misconception that, in general, the elderly have poor cognitive processing abilities. Here, an attempt is made to clarify the need to address the elderly's lack of visual processing abilities during the pre-screening process.
