Service-learning is an instructional method that integrates community service and academic study into a project that promotes civic responsibility. The purpose of this research was to identify what legal issues are associated with service-learning and analyze how nurse educators respond to these legal issues.

The purpose of this research was to identify what legal issues are associated with service-learning and analyze how nurse educators respond to these legal issues.
520 $a Student nurse case scenarios involving a legal issue were developed using expert opinion from five attorneys. Interviews were conducted with twenty nurse educators using the student nurse case scenarios and open-ended questions with reference to decision making, legal issue identification, nurse practice, and risk management.
520 $a Findings indicated there is inherent legal risk associated with service-learning and that nurse educators were not able to correctly identify or recognize many of the legal risks. Most notable were the similarities between the student nurse case scenarios used in the research and actual nurse educator practice, indicating that legal issues are not uncommon occurrences in nursing education.
520 $a This study established a clear identifiable link between the need for more education on legal issues and the need to provide risk management skills to nurse educators involved in service-learning projects. It is recommended that nursing schools increase efforts to inform nurse educators of their legal responsibilities to effectively and safely carry out service-learning projects in the community.
