Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1994.
A sieve feed system is used to apply powder electrostatically and magnetostatically for Selective Laser Sintering. Experiments are undertaken to determine if the sieve feed system, electrostatics, and magnetostatics improve the part quality of a sintered work piece. Theoretical analysis and experimental data are employed to discern the mechanisms of change in sintered part quality. It is found that a grounded sieve feed system improves the sintered part quality over a traditional roller feed system. The mechanism of part quality improvement is powder bed densification. Electrostatic powder application is able to improve part quality over the grounded sieve feed system, and magnetostatics are detrimental to the Selective Laser Sintering process.Subjects--Topical Terms:
