Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to establish the normal thermal profile of the knees of healthy distance runners. Twenty-six distance runners volunteered for the study. Thermographic images were taken of the anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral views of the knee. A Nirschl Phase Pain Scale was used to assess pain during the season. The data of eight subjects experiencing no pain were used to create a normal thermal profile. Multiple t-tests confirmed differences between three views (p < .05). Differences were confirmed between views using a one-way ANOVA (p < .05). A Fisher's LSD test showed where differences existed. A Pearson's Correlation coefficient was applied to determine correlation between views. The results showed significant thermal differences between legs, views, and range. There were changes from week to week and limb to limb. This study shows a need for additional research before thermography can be a reliable method to detect or assess injuries in a clinical setting.
