Thesis (M.S.)--Utah State University, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to examine how pelvic tilt influenced passive stiffness, peak passive torque, and range of motion (ROM) about the ankle joint. Eleven men and 6 women (N = 17) assumed three different anatomical positions (supine, flexion, and sitting) for two pelvic postures (normal and anterior) while their left foot was passively dorsiflexed from 10° plantar flexion to mild discomfort. A Biodex Isokinetic Dynamometer was used to measure passive stiffness, peak passive torque, and ROM; dorsiflexing the foot at 5°/s. Pelvic angle was captured using a 60-Hz Canon ES290 8-mm camcorder and digitized using Peak Motus 2-D Motion Analysis. A significant difference was determined for position main effect on stiffness, peak passive torque, and ROM (p = .01). Post-hoc tests revealed ankle joint ROM decreased as hip joint angle increased. No significant difference was revealed for posture (p = .64). Altering participant anatomical position decreased ankle joint ROM, and regardless of hip and knee joint positions, pelvic posture did not significantly influence ankle joint biomechanics.
