Thesis (M.S.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2006.
Each runner strongly prefers to use one stride frequency at each speed, and that stride frequency is usually close to the minimum cost stride frequency (MCSF). We investigated the role of elastic energy storage in determining the MCSF by studying uphill and downhill running because elastic energy use plays a small role on hills. Due to this smaller role of elastic energy, we hypothesized that altering stride frequency would change metabolic cost less during hill running than during level running. We also hypothesized that runners would use a stride frequency closer to the MCSF during uphill running than during level running because the high metabolic cost of uphill running makes cost minimization a critical factor. For downhill running, we hypothesized that runners would prefer to use stride frequencies faster than the MCSF in order to reduce impact forces. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
