Thesis (M.M.)--University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2006.
In late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century France and Italy, humanistic influence was felt in all societal arenas, and was much more than an intellectual current, as the proponents of humanism sought to replace the values of the community with those of the individual. Franco-Flemish composer Antoine Brumel (ca. 1460-ca. 1512) demonstrated a noteworthy connection to humanistic thought through the political, religious and financial viewpoints of his chapel and court employers. This, in turn, considerably altered his musical language, and in particular, his motets. Brumel's Franco-Flemish heritage is evident in the contrapuntal, horizontally conceived nature of his early motets. Later in his career, the composer revealed an awareness of Italian secular authors and their attention to rhetorical principles, especially text declamation, and incorporated these standards into his motets. Brumel synthesized his surroundings into a worldview---and therefore, musical view---that reflected humanism's imprint on all of Renaissance society.
