River Town, River World describes the evolution of Ecorse, Michigan, from the narrow French ribbon farms that Cadillac assigned to his men in 1701, to its modern aspect as the oldest, grimy industrial community along the Detroit River. Between these two extremes, the core history of Ecorse emerges. Wyandotte and Pottawatomie Indians established their villages along the Riviere Ecorces. Chief Pontiac gathered his allies on the banks of the Riviere Ecorces to convince them to throw the white man out of the Ohio River Valley. French fur traders rendezvoused around campfires along the River Ecorse and later, English settlers built log cabins and established businesses near it.

At the turn of the Twentieth Century, the United States transformed itself into an industrial giant and Ecorse changed as well, from a farming and resort community to a village and later a city that Henry Ford molded with his new fangled automobile. Pennsylvania industrialist George Fink established two steel mills in Ecorse in the 1920s that affected the lives of generations of Ecorse citizens. During its heyday from the 1940s to the 1960s, Ecorse was a thriving industrial community with a peak population of about 20,000 people. Today its population has shrunk to about 11,000 people and it is the prototype of a decaying rustbelt city.

Geography has shaped Ecorse more significantly than other Downriver cities because it is a narrow 2.7 miles, a tiny enclave carved out of a much larger Ecorse Township that the state of Michigan created in 1827. Its geographical limitations have also been intensified by political limitations. Ecorse is just as infamous for its corrupt politics and cronyism as it is for its bootleg history.

Environmental concerns have become increasingly important in Ecorse and the Downriver area as people are beginning to appreciate the importance of clean rivers and steams to wildlife and their own lives. Ecorse is cooperating in initiatives to clean up the Detroit River and Ecorse Creek.
