Culture, society and politics: A new look at Greek nationalism.
- 246 p.
Adviser: Liah Greenfeld.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University, 2006.
The end of the Cold War saw the emergence of culture as an explanatory factor in world politics. In particular, nationalism and religion have been extensively used in order to explain phenomena that seemed to go against pure economic rationality. This work tries to shed some light into the methodological confusion that dominates the field, by providing a conceptual clarification of the notion of culture and a critical discussion of the dominant theories of nationalism. This theoretical discussion is then applied to the case of modern Greece, showing how nationalism has been the dominant cultural force in the 19th and 20th centuries, and how the specificities of Greek nationalism can partially explain the contradictions in the evolution of the Greek economy from the 1950s to the 1990s as well as the reemergence of religion as a political force in the 1990s.
