The challenge of exercise adherence and adoption remains a critical issue in the field of health promotion and obesity research. Despite goals of increasing physical activity levels among adults, there is little to no change in moderate and vigorous levels of activity (Klein, 2004). Achievement goal theory has been an important theoretical approach to examining motivation in the sport and exercise setting (Roberts, 2001).

This research examined the relationship of achievement goals and fear of failure with Stages of Change for physical activity and self-reported physical activity among adults in a corporate fitness center. Adults (n = 328) from two corporate fitness centers participated and there was a similar number of men (52.1%) and women (47.5%) with a combined mean age of 42.67.

Logistic regression analysis was utilized to examine two models which predicted level of stage of change and self-reported physical activity. The first model was significant (chi2 = 21.048, p = .000) and indicated that mastery approach goals, fear of failure and mastery avoidance goals were significant variables related to level of stage of change for physical activity. For each unit increase in mastery approach goals, the likelihood of being in a higher stage of change for physical activity increased by 83%. For each unit increase in mastery avoidance goals and fear of failure, the likelihood of being in a higher stage of change for activity decreased by 19.6% and 46% respectively. The second model was also significant (chi2 = 15.239, p = .000) and indicated that mastery approach goals and performance avoidance goals were significant variables associated with level of self-reported physical activity. For each unit increase in mastery approach goals, the likelihood of being at a higher level of self-reported physical activity increased by 66%. For each unit increase in performance avoidance goals, the likelihood of being in a higher stage of change for exercise decreased by 20.5%.
