- 51 p.
Chair: Eric Seemann.
Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2006.
An in depth exploration of psychological reactance as a characterological variable is presented. The theory of psychological reactance assumes that individuals have a core set of behaviors to which they feel entitled. When these free behaviors are lost or threatened, the individual seeks to regain control of, or prevent the loss of the behavior, resulting in a state of reactant arousal. While many researchers have shown reactance to be characterological in nature, to date, no single study has attempted to refine the construct by thorough examination of the accepted measures of psychological reactance.

The present study seeks to determine whether these inventories are measuring the same construct, or merely different aspects of reactance. This is accomplished by examining the three prominent self-report inventories of psychological reactance for construct validity by investigating the characterological profiles revealed by "high" reactance individuals on a measure of normal personality.
